The Influence of Resilience on Mental Well-Being and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms of Trauma-Exposed Individuals : Mediating Effects of Post-Traumatic Growth and Post-Traumatic Negative Cognitions
Cho Yong-Rae

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the impact of resilience on mental health and to shed light on its specific mechanism. Based on previous studies and literature review, three partial and one full mediational models in which post-traumatic growth or post-traumatic negative cognitions would mediate the relations between resilience and mental well-being and post-traumatic stress symptoms were proposed. Three hundred twenty one trauma-exposed undergraduate students completed self-report inventories measuring resilience, post-traumatic growth, post-traumatic negative cognitions, mental well-being, post-traumatic stress, depressive, and anxiety symptoms. Resilience was a significant predictor of mental well-being and post-traumatic stress symptoms after controlling for the other relevant predictors, but did not moderate the relations between trauma exposure and mental well-being or post-traumatic stress symptoms. The results of structural equation analysis supported an integrated partial mediational model in which both post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic negative cognitions would partially mediate the relation between resilience and mental well-being, and post-traumatic negative cognitions would fully mediate the relation between resilience and post-traumatic stress symptoms. In conclusion, these results suggest that resilience uniquely contributes to mental well-being and post-traumatic stress symptoms, and that these impacts may be mediated through post-traumatic growth or post-traumatic negative cognitions.
